Salt Lake City is Utah's capital and the state's largest city, home to about 222,700 residents in a valley framed by the Wasatch Range to the east and the Great Salt Lake to the west, settled by Mormon pioneers in 1847 and platted with the wide, gridded streets that still define downtown today. Single-family housing is concentrated in east-side neighborhoods like Yalecrest, a National Historic District of about 1,487 homes built mostly between 1920 and 1939 in English Tudor and Cottage Revival styles, and neighboring Sugar House, known for its walkable commercial strip, bungalows, and post-war cottages. Salt Lake City International Airport is just 6 miles and about 12 minutes from downtown, one of the shortest airport commutes of any state capital. Students in the Yalecrest and Sugar House area attend Highland High School, rated 7 out of 10 on GreatSchools. Hikers head up Ensign Peak, a 1-mile round-trip climb with panoramic views over the city and valley, or the paved City Creek Canyon road just north of the Capitol.
